I spent a lot of time working on the backgrounds for my animation III final -- From the start, I had a pretty clear idea of what I wanted the style to be, but it took some quality time and effort to marry the image in my head to what I was putting on paper (or in this case, the Cintiq screen).
I spent some time playing with different "flat and graphic" styles and color palettes, but I wasn't really happy with any of my first tests. The colors weren't quite working for me, and there were some issues with depth and contrast that needed to be worked out.
The final backgrounds:
I'm really happy with the way these turned out! The style is in the direction of where I want to go, and it turned out to be quite fun. I wanted my backgrounds to contrast with the warm red/cream color scheme of my main character and to feel foreboding, but not TOO dark and scary.
